BBC to screen live NFL games, weekly highlights programme

The BBC regains the rights to show live NFL matches, including the Super Bowl.

The BBC has agreed a two-year deal to screen live NFL fixtures, including Super Bowl 50 and a weekly highlights programme.

The deal marks the return of NFL to the BBC, after it lost the rights to broadcast the sport to Channel 4 in 2013.

All three International Series matches, taking place at Wembley during October and November, will be shown live on either BBC 2 or the BBC Sport website.

The deal also includes a weekly highlights show named The Road to the Super Bowl, which will run from the end of November until the conclusion of the season in February.

Super Bowl 50 takes place in San Francisco on February 7 next year and will be live on BBC TV, radio and online.

"NFL has a growing fan base in the UK and I'm delighted that the BBC can bring it free-to-air for our audience," said Barbara Slater, Director of BBC Sport.

"We look forward to delivering all the best action and drama of American Football for the next two years on BBC TV, radio and online at the BBC Sport website."

Meanwhile, Sky Sports broadcasts 100 live NFL matches a season, including the Super Bowl and at least five games a week across the regular season.

The first game of the International Series will be New York Jets vs. Miami Dolphins, shown live on BBC 2 on October 4 at 2.30pm.
