It was a decision that caused a degree of disbelief on Twitter, with many people being extremely vocal in their support of world number one golfer Rory McIlroy, who won two majors and helped Europe to retain the Ryder Cup in 2014.
Here, Sports Mole has taken a look at how the sporting world has reacted to the result of the public vote on the social networking site.
"Not only do you have to win every major next year @McIlroyRory ... You might have to do it in a rather fast golf buggy... #SPOTY."
Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan
"Obsolutely ridiculous that @McIlroyRory has not won Sports Personality 2014. Huge respect to @LewisHamilton but come on."
English golfer Ian Poulter
"Thought @McIlroyRory should have won that!!!"
Everton and Republic of Ireland midfielder Darron Gibson
Can't believe they gave SPOTY to Hamilton. 1. Formula 1 is the most boring sport ever. 2. He brought a dog with him. 3. He's a tax exile.— Joseph Barton (@Joey7Barton) December 15, 2014
McIlroy, wins multiple golf Majors and Ryder Cup. Froch, boxing World champion. In fact every other nominee was more deserving the Hamilton.— Joseph Barton (@Joey7Barton) December 15, 2014
Tax exile's should be exempt from winning trophies paid and voted for by the tax/licence payer.— Joseph Barton (@Joey7Barton) December 15, 2014
He should never have won. He is a terrible role model to any Britain. What precedent does that set. Bad day in our history.— Joseph Barton (@Joey7Barton) December 15, 2014
"Congratulations @LewisHamilton @McIlroyRory and @jopavey ! Looked a fantastic night and all deserved winners #SPOTY2014."
Real Madrid and Wales winger Gareth Bale
"Thanks to all who voted for me! Congrats to all the candidates and especially @LewisHamilton, thoroughly deserved and a worthy winner!"
"Thank heavens that's over with, congratulations @LewisHamilton on a spectacular year."
Former England centre-forward Gary Lineker
"Nice one. @LewisHamilton Sports Personality of the Year. Well deserved. He's been such a great champion for F1, here there and everywhere."
Former F1 driver Martin Brundle
Congrats to @LewisHamilton on winning Sports personality of the year. I told you there's no way you aren't taking it home. Salute 👌— Daniel Sturridge (@D_Sturridge) December 15, 2014
"Some amazingly inspirational stories at SPOTY & a great celebration of British sport but not sure the correct winner is always crowned."
Golfer Luke Donald
"Technology of the year goes to the silver and red dodgem!!! Just have to win all 4 next year @McIlroyRory,"
