Chapecoense avoid relegation in Brazil

Chapecoense avoid relegation from Brazil's Serie A, almost one year on from the plane crash which wiped out most of their squad.

Chapecoense have avoided relegation from the Serie A in Brazil, almost one year on from the tragic air crash which wiped out most of their squad.

Seventy-one of the 77 passengers travelling on LaMia Flight 2933 were killed last November when the plane, which was carrying the Chape squad to Colombia for the Copa Sudamericana final, crashed due to a lack of fuel.

Only three members of the first-team squad were among the few survivors, and in the wake of the disaster, the league's clubs offered Chapecoense immunity from relegation for the 2017 season.

The club refused the offer, however, instead rebuilding the squad from scratch under a new manager.

Chape endured mixed fortunes over the course of the season, ultimately turning to three different managers in their plight, but made certain of their safety on Thursday with a 2-1 win over Vitoria.

The result came with three games of the regular season remaining and also put them in contention for a return to the Copa Sudamericana.
