British journalist denied entry to Azerbaijan ahead of European Games

British journalist Owen Gibson is denied entry to the European Games in Baku after criticising the Azerbaijani government's human rights record.

The British Olympic Association has said that it is "extremely disappointed" that a journalist has been denied entry to the event.

The Guardian's Owen Gibson was told that he would not be allowed entry to Azerbaijan after writing a series of articles that were critical of the Azerbaijani government's human rights record.

"We reiterate that the principles of the Olympic Charter are to be upheld throughout the games, including a media environment that allows for full and free reporting of the European Games," BOA chief executive Bill Sweeney said in a statement.

The European Games in Baku are the first of its kind, and will run until June 29.
