Anzhi Makhachkala defender Christopher Samba has said that Zenit St Petersburg fans are "racist" and believes that they are "living in another century".
Zenit's largest supporters' group, Landscrona, wrote an open letter to the club this week asking them not to sign black or gay players
"I'm not surprised," Samba told BBC Sport. "Everybody knows Zenit supporters are no good and racist. They are living in another century. It's a sad day for Russian football.
"In this time we have different communities and countries that constitute teams. If they can't accept that, then they are never going to progress."
However, Samba is against the idea of black players boycotting matches in Russia as an act of protest against Landscrona's letter.
"Boycotting, why? Because fans make statement they don't want black players," said the 28-year-old. "No. Black players should fight for the good ones - not the idiots.
"It's really sad. It's slowing down the process of Russian football being a better league. I hope the Russian federation do the necessary to sanction it."
Zenit had not signed any black player in their history until this summer.
