Nelson Piquet Jr claims inaugural Formula E Championship

Piquet Jr wins inaugural Formula E title

Nelson Piquet Jr beat Sebastien Buemi by a single point to win the inaugural Formula E Championship at the final race in London's Battersea Park.

Brazilian Piquet Jr started 16th on the grid after qualifying but a seventh-place finish in the second race of the weekend was enough for him to claim the title.

Buemi had been perfectly placed to win the crown but spun while on cold tyres, relegating him behind Bruno Senna. The Championship hung in the balance until the final corner, with Buemi unable to pass Senna for the position he needed to emerge victorious.

Piquet Jr, 29, is a former Formula One driver, best known for deliberately crashing in the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix to help his teammate Fernando Alonso win the race.
