Kris Meeke ends 13-year British wait for World Rally Championship win

Meeke ends British wait for WRC win

Kris Meeke has become the first Briton in 13 years to win a World Rally Championship event by taking victory in Rally Argentina.

The 35-year-old Citroen driver won by 18.1 seconds and is the first UK racer to triumph in the WRC since the late Colin McRae won in Kenya in 2002.

Speaking afterwards, Meeke paid tribute to McRae, who mentored the Northern Irishman during the early part of his career.

He is quoted by BBC Sport as saying: "This one's for Colin. He helped my career out at the very beginning.

"He supported me financially through to the world championship. Without his support I wouldn't be here."

McRae, the first Briton to be crowned world champion in 1995, was killed in a helicopter crash near his home in 2007.
