Russian athletes banned from Rio Paralympics

Russia have been banned from entering athletes in the 2016 Paralympics in Rio as a result of the country's doping scandal.

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has confirmed the suspension after taking action following the findings of the McLaren report.

"The anti-doping system in Russia is broken, corrupted and entirely compromised," IPC president Sir Philip Craven said at a press conference.

"The Russian Paralympic Committee are unable to ensure compliance with and enforcement of the IPC anti-doping code and the world anti-doping code within their own national jurisdiction and they can not fulfil its fundamental obligation as an IPC member.

"As a result, the Russian Paralympic Committee is suspended with immediate effect."

Published last month, the McLaren report made allegations that Russia was guilty of state-sponsored doping ahead of the Olympics and Paralympics.

However, the Eastern European nation escaped a blanket ban at the Olympics, with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) clearing 271 athletes to compete in Rio.

The Russian Paralympic Committee is expected to appeal the Paralympic ban at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, according to BBC Sport.
