Wiggins handed third in 2009 Tour de France

British cyclist Bradley Wiggins has been awarded third place in the 2009 Tour de France after the UCI wiped Lance Armstrong's third-placed finish from the record books.

Wiggins finished the race fourth behind Alberto Contador, Andy Schleck and Armstrong. However, following the Armstrong saga the 2012 Tour winner has been handed a place on the podium.

A UCI spokesperson stated: "In 2009 the placing of Mr Armstrong will be reallocated. Bradley Wiggins is the third-placed rider for the Tour de France, 2009."

Armstrong's seven Tour victories from 1999 to 2005 have been rescinded following doping allegations against him.
