Vinokourov wins as Cavendish misses out

Kazakhstan's Alexander Vinokourov has won the men's road race as Great Britain's Mark Cavendish failed in his bid for a medal.

Vinokourov saw off Colombian Rigoberto Uran after the pair had broke away from the leading group with 7km to go, with Norway's Alexander Kristoff taking the bronze medal.

A group of 33 riders broke away from the peloton with 35km left and they quickly established a gap of at least one minute.

Switzerland's Fabian Cancellara had looked well set to win a medal, but he crashed out of the race with 15km to go when he misjudged a corner and rode straight into a barrier.

Team GB's hopes for a medal had been headed by Mark Cavendish but he was left helpless as the peloton left it too late to close the gap on the breakaway group.

Cavendish was hoping to overcome his disappointment in Beijing where he was the only Great Britain cyclist to return without a medal.
