Wiggins withdraws from Giro d'Italia

Sir Bradley Wiggins has withdrawn from the Giro d'Italia through illness.

The 33-year-old revealed two days ago that he was suffering from a "chest infection and a bog-standard head cold".

The Olympic gold medallist had stated his desire to continue racing, but he has now pulled out of the competition after the chest infection failed to improve.

The 2012 Tour de France winner was over five minutes behind leader Vincenzo Nibali.
