Daan Myngheer passes away after suffering heart attack

Belgium mourns the death of Daan Myngheer just 24 hours after fellow cyclist and countryman Antoine Demoitie passed away.

Daan Myngheer has died in hospital after suffering a heart attack at the weekend.

The 22-year-old is the second Belgian cyclist to have passed away in the last 24 hours following the death of Antoine Demoitie during the Gent-Wevelgem race.

Myngheer, who was competing in the first stage of the Criterium International in Corsica, had been in an induced coma.

"It is with great emotion that we announce the death of Daan Myngheer. Daan would have been 23 in a few days and he died doing what he loved most, cycling," his team Roubaix Metropole Lille said in a statement.

"He lost his last race after struggling as a great champion. He died this Monday, March 28, in the presence of his parents, his sister Fleur Emely and her companion in the hospital of Ajaccio. All our thoughts, sincere will to parents, his sister as well as to the whole family."

Myngheer turned professional with Verandas Willems CT last year.
