Cavendish withdraws from Tour of Britain

Mark Cavendish has withdrawn from the Tour of Britain after crashing during the sixth stage of the race on Friday.

The 30-year-old initially remounted after the incident on the Stoke to Nottingham stage before Etixx-Quick Step later confirmed that the rider had withdrawn, adding that more information on his condition would be provided after the race.

Meanwhile, Cavendish's wife Peta Cavendish tweeted: "Have spoken to the boy a few times, he is ok... we still don't know for sure the extent of injuries. But it could have been a lot worse."

Cavendish's crash came on the day he was named in Great Britain's team for this month's UCI Road World Championships.
