A Ricky Ponting-inspired Hobart Hurricanes defeat Sydney Thunder by 30 runs in the Big Bash tournament.

Hobart Hurricanes inflicted yet another defeat on Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash T20 league with a 30-run victory.

The Hurricanes picked up their second win of the tournament, thanks largely to an impressive batting performance.

The home side batted first and posted 177-2. Captain Ricky Ponting top-scored with 64 runs off 45 balls before being bowled out by Chris Gayle.

Hobart made their target unreachable thanks to 30 quick runs at the end of the innings from George Bailey.

Sydney started their reply in steady fashion, Gayle and Mark Cosgrove making 30 runs before the former was caught by Ben Laughlin off Evan Gulbis' bowling.

Cosgrove himself was removed six runs later, caught and bowled by Doug Bollinger.

The Thunder were missing captain Michael Clarke, with only two men able to make team-high of 24 runs.

Chris Rogers made the total off 28 balls before Scott Styris' bowling caused him to lift the ball into the hands of Travis Birt.

Simon Keen also showed fight with 24 of just 12 balls, but was undone by the bowling of Xavier Doherty and the safe hands of Jason Krejza.

There was even time for man-of-the-match Ponting to get a wicket before the visitors finished on a valiant 147-9.
