Badminton star Lee Chong Wei handed eight-month doping ban

Former world number one badminton player Lee Chong Wei is banned for eight months for doping.

Former world number one badminton star Lee Chong Wei has been banned for eight months after being found guilty of doping.

The 32-year-old tested positive for a banned substance at the World Championships in August, but will be able to compete again on May 1 after the suspension was backdated.

The Badminton World Federation opted against issuing a two-year ban because the athlete was not aware that he had taken dexamethasone encased in gelatin capsules.

Lee, who has won 55 titles, has claimed that he did not intend to break the rules, but admitted to being "negligent".
