Stephanie Twell's final hopes hang in the balance after seventh-place finish

Stephanie Twell misses out on automatic qualification into the 5,000m final in Beijing as the GB runner faces an anxious wait to know if she advances as a fastest loser.

Stephanie Twell has failed to earn automatic qualification into the 5,000m final at the World Athletics Championships in Beijing, but could still qualify as a fastest loser.

The GB runner finished seventh in her heat this morning with a time of 15.34.72 as her progression hangs in the balance after missing out on the top five.

She missed an automatic place by slightly over nine seconds after being separated from the leading pack in the final two laps, with the Netherlands' Susan Kuijken finishing fifth on 15:25.67.

Genzebe Dibaba (15:20.82) of Ethiopia edged out Kenyan Mercy Cherono (15:20.94) to finish first.

Twell is Britain's only female representative in this event.
