Ennis-Hill second in 100m hurdles heat

Olympic champion Jessica Ennis-Hill has started the heptathlon by claiming second in her 100m hurdles heat, while Katarina Johnson-Thompson was forced to settle for a third-place finish in the first event at the World Championships.

It was a modest display for Ennis-Hill in one of her best events, but she still managed to come through in a time of 12.91s behind Nadine Visser, who took the lead in the overall standings.

Johnson-Thompson, who was given a place in the third heat, made a sluggish start out of the blocks but she rallied impressively to finish third in a personal best time of 13.37s.

Laura Ikauniece-Admidina clinched victory ahead of Grit Sadeiko in 13.21s, but there was disappointment for USA's Barbara Nwaba, who was unable to finish after hitting the first hurdle.

Yorgelis Rodriguez won the opening heat in 13.73s, while Karolina Tyminska recorded a time of 13.52 to win the second race.
