Matthew Hudson-Smith qualifies for 400m semi

Team GB's Matthew Hudson-Smith qualifies for the semi-final of the men's 400m in Rio, while teammate Martyn Rooney crashes out.

Team GB sprinter Matthew Hudson-Smith has secured his place in the semi-finals of the men's 400m in Rio de Janeiro.

The 21-year-old automatically qualified with a time of 45.26s and a third-place finish in his heat, which was good enough for eighth overall from a field of 50 athletes.

It was heartbreak for Hudson-Smith's teammate Martyn Rooney, meanwhile, as he crashed out after posting a time of 45.6s in his heat.

Rooney was forced to endure an agonising wait to find out if he had qualified as one of the three fastest losers, but was usurped at the last as a speedy final heat saw him drop down to the fifth-fastest loser.

Reigning Olympic champion Kirani James posted the fastest time of the first round, qualifying with a time of 44.93s.
