Callum Hawkins finishes ninth in men's Olympic marathon

Callum Hawkins takes ninth place in the men's marathon at Rio 2016, in a race that saw Eliud Kipchoge take control to claim gold for Kenya.

Great Britain's Callum Hawkins produced one of the performances of his life to finish inside the top 10 of the men's marathon at the Olympic Games.

The 24-year-old, still at the early stages of his career, claimed a surprise ninth-place finish at the end of a damp race in Rio de Janeiro.

Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya took gold in a time of 2.08:44, ahead of Ethiopia's Feyisa Lilesa (+02.20) and American athlete Galen Rupp (+02.31).

Kipchoge collapsed to the floor after securing victory in a race that he largely dominated, but Britain's Hawkins was just as pleased as he timed his charge to perfection to record a solid finish.
