Allan Wells says his 100m Olympic gold was won with "honesty and commitment"

British Olympian Allan Wells has strongly denied rumours that drugs helped him win 100m gold at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

A BBC documentary shown on Wednesday suggested that Wells was supplied with the anabolic steroid Stromba by Dr Jimmy Ledingham, a doctor working for Great Britain at the time.

The allegations include the testimony of three men who knew him well and recorded exchanges with Dr Ledingham.

"I was taking food supplements, I was taking vitamins, I was taking high-calorie energy sources, and at times I did think I overdid it," Wells told Sky Sports News.

"I did put on weight, but certainly not as discussed the other night. That was disgusting. I've never been 14 stone.

"I would definitely be unhappy to give it [his Olympic medal] back under any circumstances. You know that was won with honesty and sincerity and commitment."

Wells, 63, is just one of three British athletes to win 100m Olympic gold, and has been a strong critic of drug use in sport for a number of years.
