Katarina Johnson-Thompson sets British high jump record

Great Britain's Katarina Johnson-Thompson clears 1.97m to set a new national high jump record.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson set a new British high jump record as she successfully defended her indoor title in Sheffield yesterday afternoon.

The 22-year-old cleared 1.97m, before going on to fall short in her attempts to overcome the two-metre barrier.

"I cleared the 1.97m first attempt with space so I think I could have done a little better. But it's my first high jump competition of the year and things are still improving so hopefully I can get it in the future," she told The Telegraph.

"This time of year it's always nerve-racking to go into competition because you don't know what sort of shape you're in. Now I know that I am in quite good shape so I can move on to the other events with confidence."

Johnson-Thompson finished ahead of 17-year-old compatriot Morgan Lake, who broke the national indoor junior record by clearing 1.94m.

As a result, Lake has secured her place in the Team GB squad for March's European Indoor Championships in Prague.
