Jessica Ennis: Crowd "blew me away"

Jessica Ennis praises the crowed for the reception that they have given her during the opening two rounds of the Olympics.

Jessica Ennis has praised the Olympic crowd for the reception she was handed during the opening two events of the heptathlon earlier today.

The British athlete, competing in front of a home support, was cheered loudly when her name was read out prior to the 100m hurdles.

"Just stepping into the stadium blew me away," she told BBC Sport. "How much [the crowd] got behind me was amazing.

"I was nervous but strangely calmer than I have been at previous tournaments."

During the hurdles discipline, the 26-year-old broke the British record with a time that would have been good enough to win gold in the individual event during the 2008 Games in Beijing.

"I'm literally speechless," she added. "When I crossed the line I had to double check because I could not believe that time."

Ennis currently tops the heptathlon standings heading into the evening session.
