Live Commentary: Olympic Athletics day two as it happened

Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake and Jessica Ennis will all be in Olympics athletic action today. Follow all the events with Sports Mole here.

Good evening and welcome to Sports Mole's live coverage from day two of the athletics at the Olympic Games in London.

What a morning it was for Britain's Jessica Ennis. The 26-year-old heads into the final event of the heptathlon tonight with a healthy lead at the top of the overall standings.

Fellow Brits Mo Farah, Dai Greene, Greg Rutherford and Chris Tomlinson will also be in action as the night progresses.

Not forgetting the final of the women's 100m. We'll have it all covered right here.

10.28pmThere's more tears for Ennis and I'm sure there is plenty more crying Brits in the stadium. The national anthem concludes an unbelievable night. It's surely the best evening in British Olympic history and I thank you for spending it here on Sports Mole with myself and Liam. Goodnight everyone.

10.25pmThe crowd erupts into cheers, again. Ennis has the gold medal around her neck and is given a hug by Lord Coe. Everything for Team GB tonight has been perfect.

10.24pmLord Sebastian Coe is here and I'm not sure if Ennis will ever stop smiling.

10.21pmEnnis is back and the night is going to end with her being awarded the gold medal. the crowd are going crazy after an unbelieveable night.

10.20pmMo Farah, the third gold medalist for Team GB tonight, told BBC Sport: "It's never going to get any better than this it is the best moment of my life. It was just amazing, my legs were getting tired but the crowd gave me a huge lift. I want to thank everyone associated with me."

10.17pmRutherford added: "I can't tell you how hard everyone has worked for me. I thought I would jump further than that but I don't care. I am an Olympic champion. What a night for British athletes, three gold medals out of three."

10.16pmGreg Rutherford, the Olympic long jump champion has said: "I knew I was in great shape. I have probably one of the best teams in the world. They are incredible. I have the most amazing parents and the most beautiful girlfriend."

10.12pmEnnis continued: "I told myself at the start that I'm only going to have one moment to do this in front of crowd a in London and I just wanted to give them a good show."

10.11pmAn emotional Ennis has been fighting back the tears to speak to BBC Sport: "I honestly can't believe it after all the hard work and after the disappointment in Beijing. I am just so happy. I want to thank everyone who has supported me, they have been amazing. I am so thankful that everyone has helped me all this way. I just had to give it everything at the end. I just wanted to make sure I gave them something and bought it all home."

10.09pmSurely the only way we can finish tonight is to let the British trio have the final say.

10.05pmIt seems like an age since Ennis was confirmed as the heptathlon champion. The performance from the 26-year-old, the emotions of Fraser-Pryce, the heroics of Rutherford and the class of Farah. This is why we love the Olympics!

10.00pmFraser-Pryce can now call herself a double Olympic champion. Some critics doubted she could do it but it's a superb display from the sprinter.

9.59pmWe will not be forgetting about her now! The Jamaican recovers from an average start to storm to the front and retain her title. Jamaica continue to dominate sprinting. Fraser-Pryce is the Olympic champion with Jeter taking silver and Campbell-Brown collecting the bronze medal.

9.57pmLet's not forget about the defending champion, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.

9.56pmWe're not even finished yet! The women's 100m final is about to start. Carmelita Jeter has been impressive but she'll be threatened by Veronica Campbell-Brown.

9.54pmI'm not sure if I'll ever experience a night like it. Ennis, Rutherford and Farah have shown us what the Olympics is all about.

9.52pmSuper Saturday? I think Team GB will agree with you. There's chants of Farah in the Team GB football match too.

9.51pmMo's wife, Tanya, is next in line for a hug. I'm not sure if a woman who is seven months pregnant should experience that kind of stress but it's all worth it now.

9.50pmGalen Rupp of America takes the silver medal and he was superb in the final lap. Tariku Bekele held on for the bronze medal. Farah embraces his daughter on the track, what a moment for Mo!

9.48pmIt's surely the greatest night in athletics for Great Britain. Farah makes it three gold medals for the hosts and Britain finally have a winner in the 10,000m.

9.47pmGold for Farah He does it! Mo Farah produces an unbelieveable effort in the last alp to cruise away from the field and win the 10,000m. There's tears from Farah and I'm sure there'll be plenty from the British public tonight.

9.46pmMasai is trying to catch Farah, 200m to go and the lead is tight. Can Farah do it?

9.45pmFarah takes one last look and he's going to sprint. One lap to go!

9.45pmTwo laps to go and the noise is amazing at the Olympic Stadium. The big sprint is coming. Farah, Masai and Bekele are leading.

9.44pmGebregziabher Gebremariam is at the front, Bekele is there too. It's going to be tight.

9.42pmThe crowd are going crazy with four laps to go as Farah moves to the front. there's plenty of looks around from the competitors. We know he is a good sprinter but will he get the chance.

9.41pmFarah begins to make his move on the outside, he's in third place now behind Masai and Tariku Bekele.

9.39pmBekele is adopting the same approach as Farah. When will the duo make their move?

9.38pmMoses Masai and Wilson Kiprop are leading for Kenya and Farah is just sitting behind the leading pack. 3000m left in the race.

9.36pmIf it's possible, the atmosphere is building at the Olympic Stadium. There's 10 more laps to go, Farah running this race very smartly.

9.34pmThe leaders are determined to take the race away from the favourites but surely they will tire later in the race.

9.32pmKenenisa Bekele is one of the favourites and he looks dangerous. the race is starting to slow down and that could be good news for Farah.

9.31pmFarah is looking relaxed just behind the leading pack. His wife, who is seven months pregnant, looks terrified. We're 12 minutes into the race and we approaching the halfway point.

9.30pmRutherford is enjoying the celebrations, if you're just joining us, Great Britain have won two medals inside the Olympic Stadium tonight. Jess Ennis and Rutherford have set these games alight.

9.28pmFarah is slotted in behind the Ethiopian contingent. The speed is increasing and the crowd looked to determined to cheer throughout.

9.26pmThere's plenty of pushing in the 10,000m but Farah refuses to be bullied. It's all a bit playground considering they're in the Olympics.

9.25pmIt's a foul from Rutherford but I'm surprised he could even attempt the jump. He's in disbelief but it will hit him soon. Greg Rutherford is the winner of the long jump. Can Farah make it three gold medals for Team GB?

9.23pmGold for Rutherford Claye can only foul in his final jump and Rutherford has Team GB's second gold medal of the night. He's got one more jump to come but he's the Olympic champion. What an ovation for Rutherford!

9.22pmWill Claye is back, he is the only threat to Rutherford now.

9.21pmTomlinson can't get into the medals with his final jump, it's a good effort from the Brit but he may have to watch Rutherford collect the gold.

9.19pmFarah's pursuit of a gold medal begins as the big field begins the 10,000m. Plenty of the Kenyan athletes will be a threat to the Brit though.

9.15pmMitchell Watt, who is in second place in the long jump can't catch Rutherford and it's Tomlinson next.

9.14pmThe cheers keep on coming in Stratford, Mo Farah is on the track now preparing for the 10,000m.

9.13pmRutherford will jump last and it will be around 15 minutes before he knows if he can call himself an Olympic champion.

9.11pmTomlinson has slipped to sixth in the long jump with Australia's Mitchell Watt in second and Will Claye from America in third.

9.11pmTomlinson has slipped to sixth in the long jump with Australia's Mitchell Watt in second and Will Claye from America in third.

9.10pmThere's a foul from Rutherford but he's still ahead and whisper it quietly but 8.31m looks like it could be good enough for a gold medal.

9.08pmIt's a big victory lap for Ennis and she won't want to leave the track.

9.07pmThe people inside the Olympic Stadium will never forget tonight and neither will Ennis. It's been a completely dominant performance from start to finish and she's now Britain's golden girl in every single way.

9.04pmIt's just getting better and better for Team GB, Rutherford records a jump of 8.31m to extend his lead in the long jump. That could be the attempt that brings Great Britain their second gold of the night.

9.03pmThere's shades of Cathy Freeman in Sydney 12 years ago. Ennis is on the brink of tears as she salutes her fans. Gold for Team GB, gold for Ennis.

9.02pmGold for Ennis What a performance from Jessica Ennis! She's done it in style too with a late comeback on the home straight to win the 800m.

9.01pmEnnis slips into third but it shouldn't matter. The 26-year-old is nearly there.

9.00pmEnnis is straight to the front of the field, she's eager to lead here. The crowd sound amazing and Ennis leads after one lap.

9.00pmTatyana Chernova is the best 800m runner in the field but all eyes are on Ennis.

8.59pmAs expected there's a big reception for Ennis, she'll have to focus now. It looks simple and this could be the defining moment of the Games.

8.58pmBritish fans, compose yourselves. She's been pressured to win the gold medal at these games for four years. There's not much left for her to do and we're only a couple of minutes away from seeing Ennis try to take gold in the heptathlon.

8.56pmWhat a superb moment in these games! No medals involved but Katarina-Thompson comes in second behind Brianna Theisen. The young Brit has such a bright future and she'll never forget the reception she's just received from the crowd there.

8.54pmIt's time for the third race and what an ovation Katarina Johnson-Thompson makes her way round the track.

8.53pmTomlinson is out of the medal positions in the long jump as Sebastian Bayer goes second with a jump of 8.10m.

8.50pmBack to the heptathlon and it's Maksimava who does claim victory in a time 2:13.37. The athlete from Belarus is followed by Czech Republic's Eliska Klucinova and Marisa de Aniceto from France..

8.48pmRutherford is still not looking happy but he should be! The Brit continues with a jump of 8.14m but his lead stays at 14cm.

8.46pmThe second race is about to begin and expect Yana Maksimava to be in contention here.

8.44pmThere is four races though and the first one has just completed. Louis Hazel of Team GB finishes third behind Ivona Dadic and winner Ida Marcussen.

8.41pmJess Ennis will run in her 800m race at 8.59pm, surely Team GB will get their first gold medal in the athletics tonight.

8.35pmIt's another good jump from the Brit but it's short of his earlier attempt at 8.14m.

8.34pmThe crowd just seem to be getting louder in Stratford and they'll be going crazy if Rutherford nails this jump.

8.31pmRutherford, Claye and Tomlinson are all looking good for a medal in the long jump. The trio are the only athletes to have jumped over eight metres so far.

8.27pmIt's shaping up to be a very dramatic night inside the Olympic Stadium. Can the British men do something special in the long jump? Remember, we've also got Mo Farah later tonight as well as the women's 100m final and Jess Ennis final event in the heptathlon. Try and complain about that!

8.24pmAntonia Krivoshapka wins the heat despite tiring on the home straight. Trotter finishes well to claim second place ahead of Novlene Williams-Mills of Jamaica, who qualifies as a fastest loser.

8.21pmIt's time for the final heat of the 400m. American DeeDee Trotter is showing off some interesting facial art. Team GB's Lee McConnell is also present.

8.20pmTomlinson is then pushed into third position as American Will Claye records a jump of 8.07m.

8.19pmThe long jump competition has started like a house on fire. Greg Rutherford knocks Tomlinson off the leaderboard with a superb jump of 8.21m. The British duo are firing this evening.

8.17pmGood evening everyone by the way! With all the madness I've forgotten my manners. The final event of the heptathlon is fast approaching with the British crowd desperate to see Jess Ennis claim gold.

8.16pmThere's no time to rest inside the Olympic Stadium as the 400m continues. Amantle Montsho qualifies in first place with American Francena McCorory closely following in second. Sadly it's the end for Team GB's Shana Cox, she finishes in seventh.

8.13pmChris Tomlinson takes the lead in the long jump! A solid jump of 8.08m moves him ahead of his rivals but he insists on staring at the pit afterwards.

8.08pmIt's a great race for Ohuruogu as she takes second in the semi-final. Sanya Richards-Ross completely dominated the race to claim victory but she'll know how much Ohuruogu is improving.

8.06pmOhuruogu has started well in the 400m semi-finals and she's looking good.

8.01pmRight, that's my stint in the commentary box done! Taking you through the remainder of the session is Callum Mulvihill. Enjoy!

8.00pmThe women's 400m semi-finals is also getting underway shortly.

7.55pmComing up shortly is the final of the men's long jump. The British pairing of Tomlinson and Rutherford are gunning for medals in this one.

7.52pmThat was close! Nigeria Blessing Okagbare came from nowhere to share the win in that semi-final in a time of 10.92. America's Tianna Madison finished alongside her.

7.50pmJust moments away from the last semi-final of the women's 100m.

7.48pmA quick check on the discuss final for you. Germany's Nadine Muller is currently leading the way with a distance of 65.71m.

7.44pmAmerica's Allyson Felix also qualified in second spot.

7.44pm10.86 - told you! What a great run from the Jamaican. She even eased up towards the end of the race. Fraser-Pryce vs. Jeter in the final is going to be an interesting battle.

7.40pmSemi-final two coming up. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce goes in this one. Expect a quick time for her.

7.39pmA "disappointed" Oyepitan has been talking to BBC Sport: "I'm not happy with my race. I went out okay and I thought I drove pretty well. The end wasn't great. I'm really disappointed, I can't lie." She still has the 200m to come.

7.37pmMeanwhile it is the end of the road for Oyepitan. She finished last in the eight-woman field in a time of 11.36 seconds.

7.36pm...And Carmlea Jeter cruises to victory. Great run from the America, who recorded a time of 10.83 seconds. Jamaica's Veronica Campbell-Brown finished second.

7.35pmSemi-final one is about to start...

7.32pmThe first of which sees Britain's Abiodun Oyepitan battle for a place in the final. The 32-year-old is not expected to get there, but then again not many people gave her a chance of reaching this far.

7.31pmWe'll keep you in the know regarding the discuss, but our main focus will be on the semi-finals of the women's 100m.

7.26pmComing up now it's all about the women. We have the final of the discuss and the semi-finals of the 100m.

7.22pmWilliams discussing his performance with BBC Sport: "I gave it my all but it wasn't good enough. I'm gutted it has come to an end. I felt like I had the weight of the world on my shoulders."

7.19pmAll of which means that Greene has squeezed into the final by the skin of his teeth. He'll be looking for vast improvement on Monday night.

7.18pmWilliams tailed off badly in an extremely slow semi-final. Michael Tinsley wins it in 48.18, with Leford Green in second.

7.17pmDai Greene gets into the final!

7.16pmWilliams will go in lane three by the way.

7.15pmOver to you Rhys Williams! Having said that, as it stands, Dai Greene is going through as a fastest loser with a time of 48.19 seconds. Can Williams better that?

7.14pmAn angry Green talking to BBC Sport: "I just got too close to the hurdle. It was one of those things. I went for it but I think I went too hard. It was a stupid fall and a complete waste of time. I'm far too angry for anything to hurt right now."

7.12pmCulson won the race in a time of 47.93 seconds, with double Olympic champion Angelo Taylor in second. Omar Cisneros came third.

7.11pmHow unfortunate for Green. He clatters into a hurdle and appears to suffer a thigh injury. He's extremely angry with himself. Not a good start for Britain.

7.10pmJack Green is out!

7.08pmIt's now over to young Jack Green. Can he book his place in the men's 400m final? It won't be easy, he is in the same race as favourite Javier Culson.

7.05pmAn emotional Dai Greene talking to BBC Sport: "I just can't believe it. Coming down the home straight I couldn't catch them up. I should be better than that. I'm devastated. I thought I went off at a decent pace. I just didn't feel like myself and I'm shocked."

7.03pmThe winner was Sanchez in a time of 47.76 seconds, while the second qualifying spot went to Jehue Gordon.

7.02pm...But he can only manage a fourth place finish. What happened there? He's flat out on the track and has his head in his hands. That could be the end of his Olympic dream and he knows it.

7.01pmGreene is looking very smooth at the moment with 200m remaining...

7.00pmThe first men's 400m semi-final is underway...

6.58pmDai Greene is in the first semi-final. He goes in lane seven of race that also includes Felix Sanchez.

6.57pmFrom a British point of view, Dai Greene, Rhys Williams and Jack Green are all vying for a place in the final, which takes place on Monday evening.

6.56pmRight, coming up is the semi-finals of the men's hurdles.

6.43pmLooking back briefly, among all the big names, got to admit that Ryan Bailey impressed me greatly in the 100m heats this morning. He ran the fastest time, beating the likes of Bolt, Powell, Blake and Gay. Find out what he has had to say about it here.

6.34pmNot long now until the athletics gets underway. Just under 30 minutes. Have to say that Ennis is the thing I'm most looking forward to this evening. The noise inside the Olympic Stadium should she win gold will be incredible. It will be one of the best moments of the Games, no doubt.

6.24pmGuatemala's Erick Barrondo took the silver medal, while Chen's compatriot Zhen Wang claimed the bronze gong.

6.22pmWhat great endurance showed by Chen, who clocked a time of 1:18.46. That must be one of the most gruelling events at the Games.

6.20pmGOLD! Chen wins gold for China in the men's 20km race walk.

6.15pmChen is coasting here. There's still a little bit of work to do, but he's high-fiving the crowd as he walks past.

6.13pmBut before all of that, the men's 20km race walk is coming to an end. It looks like there is going to be another gold coming China's way thanks to Ding Chen, who currently leads the way with 1km remaining.

6.12pmFrom one Brit to another. Long distance runner Mo Farah goes in the final of the men's 10,000m at 9.15pm. The evening ends with the final of the women's 100m. You lucky people!

6.11pmThen it is the one most of us are waiting for. Can Jess Ennis win heptathlon gold? We'll find out at around when 8.45pm when she runs the 800m.

6.10pmWe then have the women's 100m semi-finals, before the men's long jump final. There's then more women's action in the semi-finals of the 400m.

6.09pmSo what have we got coming up for you? Britain's Dai Greene goes in the semi-finals of the men's 400m hurdles around 7pm, then the women's discuss final takes centre stage.

6.06pmEvening all! Here we are again then. They'll be medals galore this evening. It really feels that the athletics is hotting up now.

14:10The 800m will take place just before 9.00pm and you can join us again tonight for the evening session inside the Olympic Stadium. That's all from us for now but make sure you come back for what promises to be an exciting night of Athletics later.

14:09All of that is just good news for Ennis. The Brit still leads the heptathlon with one event left. She'll surely win gold following the 800m tonight and Sports Mole will be here to guide you through the drama.

14:06The javelin finishes in the Heptathlon with Ifadidou taking the victory ahead of French duo Nana Djimou Ida.

14:01Ennis is finished for the afternoon and it's just the 800m left tonight. The gold medal has surely been secured but that race promises to be one of the defining moments of these Games.

14:00The support for Ennis has been superb. SHe approaches the line for the final time in the javelin and responds to the ovation with a big throw of 47.49 metres. It's a new lifetime best for Ennis and things are just getting better for Team GB's golden girl.

13:57The reason she is second is because Sofia Ifadidou has launched the javelin 56.96 metres. That's a new Olympic record in the javelin from her.

13:55Nana Djimou Ida is back and it's well over 50 metres again. She's not delighted with the throw but the French athlete is still currently second.

13:53Lithuania's Skujyte goes over 50 metres with her second attempt and that's her best throw this year. She's performed well in this event but any hopes of catching Ennis look to be fading.

13:50There's big cheers in the stadium as the announcer reveals that Andy Murray and Laura Robson have reached the mixed doubles semi-final. The Games is just getting better for the Brits.

13:47It's just short of her first attempt but it's recorded over 45 metres again. Ennis still holds the lead in the heptathlon.

13:46It's nearly time for Jessica Ennis to throw for the second time. A lot of pressure is on the Brit but she's coping very well so far.

13:44Sofia Ifadidou of Greece has moved into second place with a throw 54.54 metres. Plenty of power on show here.

13:41To those of you who didn't know, Team GB's Louise Hazel won the javelin event in her heptathlon group with a throw of 47.38 metres earlier this afternoon.

13:39Chambers added: "You can train all year but ultimately, you have to run fast at the championships and I have been taking it step-by-step to get here. I am really happy to be here. It is a fast track and I need to get through the rounds."

13:37Dwain Chambers has been speaking to BBC Sport following his victory in the 100m first round: "You don't understand how nervous I was. I am glad to get through the heat, the roar of the crowd was amazing. It inspired me and I can see how much of an impact it has having on people like Jess."

13:34It's a very good start from Ennis as she produces a starting throw of 46.61 metres. Excellent from the 26-year-old and she can almost see the gold medal.

13:33Ennis is composing herself, the javelin is far from her best event but she just needs a solid performance from here to win gold.

13:31Antoinette Nana Djimou Ida smashes the Olympic heptathlon javelin record with a throw of 55.87 meteres. Hugely impressive from the French athlete.

13:30Austra Skujyte's first attempt is recorded at 48.64 metres. Lilli Schwarzkopf is leading the group in the javelin with a throw 49.37 metres.

13:27We're fast approaching the conclusion of the heptathlon. Jessica Ennis needs a good performance in the javelin to take a step closer to that gold medal.

13:22There's a huge smile across the face of Chambers and the crowd gave him a good reception there.

13:20Chambers wins the heat! It's a time of 10.02 seconds and that's one of his better races. Jimmy Vicaut is second and Bledman qualifies in third place.

13:18Keston Bledman is probably the favourite for this race. The Trinidad and Tobago athlete has a personal best of 9.86 seconds.

13:17The controversial Dwain Chambers is preparing for heat seven. Kim Collins would have competed in this race but all eyes are firmly on Chambers from British fans.

13:12Simple from Blake as he accelerates enough to get a comfortable lead before relaxing in the final stages. The time is 10 seconds and the Jamaican is joined by Ryota Yamagata and Bingtian Su. Positive signs for Blake and this event looks a cracker this year.

13:10Blake looking completely focused on the track.

13:09Gemili tells BBc Sport: "To come to the Olympics and to walk inside the stadium with the cheer is unbelievable for me. Things are happening quickly this year, but I have worked hard. I only started in athletics in January and the results are showing now."

13:09What a promising start to Gemili's Olympic career! Yohan Blake is up next. Plenty of people tipping him as the winner this year.

13:06More big cheers inside the stadium as Holly Bleasdale clears 4.55m in the pole vault.

13:04Superb start from Gemili, the former Dagenham & redbridge player storms into the lead before being caught by Powell. The Jamaican wins the heat in 10.04 seconds with Gemili in second and Churandy Martina also qualifying.

13:02Big reception for Gemili, this lad has a big future.

13:01Adam Gemili goes in the next race and there's high hopes for Team GB's 18-year-old sprinter. He'll have to be focused for this now and he's joined by Asafa Powell in the heat.

12:56Bolt turns to the camera after his victory to say: "Number one, all day, every day baby!"

12:56It's not quick from Bolt but he wins the heat in 10.08 seconds. Plenty more to come from the champion but he's safely through. Dasaolu does qualify in third place and he's joined by Daniel Bailey.

12:54Bolt looking very cool before the race. Will he just do enough to qualify? It remains to be seen if the mind games with Yohan Blake will begin. The trademark rub of the head from Bolt and that means we're nearly ready.

12:52It's time for Mr Bolt. The defending champion looks predictably relaxed on the track. What can he do on this apparent fast track? Team GB's James Dasaolu is next to Bolt in lane five.

12:50Ben Youssef Meite of the Ivory Coast qualifies in second and it's Justyn Warner who claims third place.

12:49It's getting better in the 100m! Bailey produces a superb time of 9.88, that's a stunning time in the heats. He surprised many in the American Olympic trials but he looks a class act.

12:48It's time for the third heat of the 100m and this race is certainly not as star-studded as the others. USA's Ryan Bailey is the favourite.

12:46Team GB's Louise Hazel is continuing in the heptathlon has just produced a superb effort of 47.38 metres in the javelin. The Olympic Stadium give her a big ovation and rightly so, it's a good display from Hazel.

12:43Gatlin tells BBC Sport: "The track is super fast. I want to give the spectators a good show."

12:41Atkins claimed second and Rondel Sorrillo also progresses to the next round.

12:40Superb from Gatlin! The American recovers from an average start to breeze past his rivals and record a time of 9.97 seconds.

12:39Derrick Atkins is also in this race. He's a good competitor so expect him to go well.

12:37Gatlin won the 100m in Athens eight years ago and he's been in good form this season after returning from a drug ban. That debate is for another day though, we're just here to watch some very fast men.

12:34It looks pretty good for Gay. That's a solid time after easing off in the final stages. Justin Gatlin is the star of the next heat.

12:33Gay takes the first heat comfortably! A good start from the American gives him a good lead and he has plenty left in the tank it seems. The time is 10.08 seconds and it's Thompson who finishes second with Zambia's Gerald Phiri also qualifying.

12:30Richard Thompson is another sprinter to keep an eye on in this heat.

12:30Gay is the clear favourite for the first heat. It's the first three that will qualify and the athletes are being now being announced to the spectators.

12:28Tyson Gay is in the first heat, can the American surprise Bolt and Yohan Blake at these games?

12:27The 100m heats are fast approaching and everyone's favourite Jamaican, Usain Bolt, is currently warming up.

12:26It appears that Kim Collins is finished on the international stage. The sprinter has tweeted following his expulsion from St Kitts and Nevis squad. "For those who saw me run in Mexico. That's the last time I represent my country. Even men in prison get their wives to visit."

12:23Sadly the time of Bridget Franek has pushed Barbara Parker out of the qualifying positions. Eilish McColgan finished ninth in the final heat.

12:21Ayalew wins the heat with Zaripova, Njoroge and Moldner-Schmidt following closely to qualify.

12:19Mercy Wanjiku Njoroge of Kenya is challenging Ayalew's lead. Antje Moldner-Schmidt is looking good too and Yuliya Zaripova is close to the front. It's going to be a close finish.

12:16Hiwot Ayalew is leading this one so far and the Ethiopian is looking very comfortable.

12:13The final heat of the women's steeplechase has just started, with Team GB's Eilish McColgan trying to qualify.

12:10That's a big shame for the games. Collins is a superb competitor with a big character.

12:08Breaking News Former 100m world champion Kim Collins has revealed that he has been thrown out of the St Kitts and Nevis squad. Early reports have suggested that Collins is being punished for staying outside of the Olympic village with his coach and wife.

12:06It's Assefa who wins the heat and the Ethiopian has clocked a time of 9:25.42 seconds to ensure qualification. Ghribi takes second with Coburn looking relaxed in third. Spain's Marta Dominguez completes the group of automatic qualifiers.

12:02There's three athletes breaking clear from the rest of the field here with Emma Coburn, Habiba Ghribi and Sofia Assefa leading.

12:00Good afternoon to everyone and as Liam says we are underway in the second heat of the women's 3000m steeplechase. Plenty of photographers perched close to the water hurdle, waiting for a mistake.

11.56amAnd that is far as I go. Sports Mole's very own Callum Mulvihill will be taking you through the remainder of the session - starting with the second women's 3000m steeplechase heat, which has just got underway. Enjoy!

11.52amQuick heptathlon check. Ennis now has 5159 points, with Skujyte second on 4901. Chernova is third on 4869 points.

11.49amParker talking to BBC Sport: "I wanted to be top four. I tried my best and that is all I can do. I'm not sure that will be good enough to reach the final."

11.48amGermany's Gesa Felicitas Krause wins with a time of 9.24.91. Parker must wait to see if she qualifies as a fastest runner-up. Two more heats remaining.

11.46amParker finishes sixth!

11.45amParker is now slipping back down the field. She's sixth and the leading pack are pulling away. One lap to go.

11.42amWith the five-minute mark approaching, Parker is looking comfortable in fifth spot. Top six go through.

11.37amThe women's steeplechase is underway...

11.35amWe also have round one of the women's 3000m steeplechase coming up - a field which includes Britain's Barbara Parker.

11.33amThe heptathlon attention will now turn towards the javelin, which gets underway in around 15 minutes. If she does well in that, Ennis will almost be guaranteed gold.

11.31am...but her run up is all wrong and the jump isn't great. It doesn't improve her 6.19m.

11.30amKJT time...

11.30amIt's even better! 6.48m. She has one hand on that gold medal now. Surely she will not let it slip from her grasp.

11.29amIt's another great jump! Awaiting the distance...

11.28amNow it's over to Ennis...

11.28amLet's go to the heptathlon and Dobrynska taking her final jump, which she fails! That is three no jumps from the defending champion, who has blown her chances of regaining the title.

11.26amRooney eases into second place and reaches the semi-finals. Good run from the 25-year-old. Belgium's Kevin Borlee, whose brother won an earlier heat, won the race, with Rabah Yousif in third.

11.23amNo time for breath here! Britain's Martin Rooney is now running in the final heat. With Merritt's exit, the gold medal is wide open now.

11.23amAnd here's Merritt, also talking to BBC Sport: "Countless hours of treatment from 8am until 10pm. I hurt it in my last race in Monaco and I felt like I could come out and get my way through. There was no reason to push it. I started floating and I felt it. I'm going to rest it and get ready for the World Championships next year. It's Olympic year and this what you work to get to. I've been working hard all season and have been unbeaten but things happen."

11.20amWilliams talking to BBC Sport: "It was good. I've been waiting years for this opportunity. I was calm and made sure I stuck to my race plan. The crowd delivered and I have to thank them a lot for that."

11.19amBetter news for Britain's Williams, who qualifies in third spot. Steven Soloman won the race with a time of 45.18 seconds, with Lalonde Gordon second.

11.18amDefending champion Merritt is out of the men's 400m! The American has been struggling with an Achilles problem, which has forced him to pull up after around 100m. Drama!

11.17amMerritt pulls up!

11.14amMore men's 400m heats and more British interest. This time Conrad Williams is competing in a heat that also includes American Lashawn Mertitt.

11.13amLet's quickly take you over to the women's pole vault, where Britain's Kate Dennison has cleared the opening height of 4.25m. Her compatriot, Holly Bleasdale, who is yet to go.

11.11amBritain's Levine talking to BBC Sport: "It was all right. My aim is to just be up there. The crowd is fantastic."

11.10amChris Brown won the race with a time of 45.40 seconds, while Tony McQuay ended up in the runners-up spot.

11.09amHe hangs on to third place and as a result qualifies for the semi-finals!

11.09amHere comes Levine, the crowd roar him on...

11.08amBack over to the men's 400m heats and we have our first Brit running. A cool looking Nigel Levine goes in lane two.

11.07am...and she jumps 6.25m. That's a good leap for the Lithuanian, who is the not strongest in the put.

11.06amEnnis's closest challenger Skujyte is now up for her second attempt...

11.04am...who improves with a jump of 6.19m. The 19-year-old Brit is performing really well at the moment. While she won't challenge the medals this time, it looks positive for Rio in 2016.

11.02amHere comes KJT...

11.02am6.40m! One step closer to the gold medal. A smile beams across the 26-year-old's face.

11.01amGREAT JUMP from Ennis in the heptathlon! Awaiting the distance...

11.00amBut then what do I know?! Nellum finishes second, well behind Demetrius Pinder.

10.58amHere comes another men's 400m heat. America's Bryshon Nellum is the one to look out for here.

10.57amAnother foul from defending Dobrynska, who has just one more jump remaining. She's struggling here.

10.56amMore pressure has just been heaped upon Ennis in the heptathlon. Chernova has just extended her lead, leaping 6.54m.

10.55amPavel Maslak finished second in that heat, with Pavel Trenikhin in third.

10.55amHe then goes on to tell BBC Sport: "I'm in shape and I felt great. You have to find your rhythm and I did today." He makes it sound so easy!

10.53am...The Belgian completes the race in an impressive 44.43 seconds. That's stunning. He's sent out a real message to his fellow competitors with that. It is the second fastest time of the year!

10.52amWhat a run this is from Borlee so far...

10.50amHeat three of the men's 400m will soon be off. Jonathan Borlee of Belgium is the biggest name to be running in this one.

10.50amHeat three of the men's 400m will soon be off. Jonathan Borlee of Belgium is the biggest name to be running in this one.

10.48amQuick heptathlon update - Tatyana Chernova is still leading in the pit with her jump of 6.44m. Austra Skujyte, who is second in the standings behind Ennis, just recorded a no jump.

10.46amRamon Miller finished second in that heat, while Liemarvin Bonevacia, running for the Independent Olympic Athletes, came third.

10.46amHe then tells BBC Sport: "I was trying to conserve as much energy as possible. Everybody is motivated and hungry. I feel good."

10.45am...And that looked ever so easy! He seemed to jog the last 50m or so, clocking a time of 45.23 seconds in the process.

10.44amJames is looking good with 150m to go...

10.43amNext up in the men's 400m heats is Greneda's Kirani James. A lot is expected of the 19-year-old, who won the World Championships in 2011.

10.40amPistorius's time of 45.44 seconds was a best of the season for the double amputee, who tells BBC Sport: "It was such a mix of emotions. This is crowd is just amazing. That's what it's all about. I've run so many times in the UK and this crowd feels like a second home to me."

10.39amA comfortable looking Luguelin Santos of the Dominican Republic won that race in a time of 45.04 seconds, while Maksim Dyldin came third.

10.37amIt's a really good run for Pistorius, who finished second and qualifies for the next round.

10.35amAs mentioned earlier, back to Pistorius, who is running in the opening heat of the men's 400m. Can the blade runner reach the semi-finals?

10.35amAnother Brit is up now - Katarina Johnson-Thompson (or KJT to save my typing fingers!) She goes a bit further than Ennis with a leap of 6.05m.

10.33am...But it's not great. She stutters heading towards the board and as a result jumps 5.95m. Two more to come from the gold medal favourite.

10.32amBut back to the heptathlon quickly because Ennis is preparing to jump...

10.31amAlso coming out is the Oscar 'the blade runner' Pistorius in the men's 400m.

10.31amIt's now the turn of defending champion Natallia Dobrynska, who gets it all wrong there! She mistimes her jump and ends up running into the pit. Almost time for Ennis.

10.29amGermany's Jennifer Oeser gets the red flag on her opening jump. She'll be disappointed with her performance in London so far.

10.28amBack to the heptathlon and a great jump from Tatyana Chernova into the pit. The Russian goes further than any of her competitors with a leap of 6.44m. She'll move up the leaderboard with that.

10.27amFabrice Coiffic of Mauritius also advances as the runner-up.

10.26amBurkina Faso's Gerard Kobeane wins it with the fastest time we have seen all morning - 10.42 seconds. It was a poor start from Kobeane as well. If he sorts that out, he could be in contention for a slot in the semi-finals of the competition.

10.23amAlso coming up shortly is the final preliminary round of the men's 100m. Two more places are up for grabs to reach round one later today.

10.22amWe've also got women's pole vault about to start! Busy, busy! This includes Britain's Holly Bleasdale, who is ranked number six in the world currently. We'll keep you posted on all the goings on.

10.20amBack at the heptathlon, Jessica Zelinka leaps 5.85m - a modest start the Canadian. Zelinka finished fifth in Beijing.

10.19amSingapore's Foo Ee Yeo also qualifies with a time of 10.57 seconds. Those two were well clear off the field.

10.18amBerenger Aymard Bosse of the Central African Republic wins through in the third preliminary round of the men's 100m with a time of 10.55 seconds. He seems to be suffering with a hamstring problem though and grimaces as he crosses the line. Let's hope he is fit enough to compete in round one.

10.16amJust before we cover the third preliminary round, a quick Garstang update! The new sprinter crossed the line in 12.81 seconds, a time just shy of his personal best. His participation is what the Olympics is all about!

10.15amGermany's Lilli Schwarzkopf, in contention for a medal at the moment, jumps an impressive 6.30m - the biggest leap so far. She could be a threat to Ennis as the day progresses.

10.12amBritain's Louise Hazel, currently in 34th in the heptathlon standings, jumps a disappointing 5.45m. The run up was all wrong there.

10.12amFernando Luman also went through as the runner-up with a time of 10.80 seconds.

10.11amJurgen Themen of Suriname wins through in a quick looking time of 10.55 seconds.

10.09amSecond preliminary round men's 100m coming up. The field includes Timi Garstang from the Marshall Islands, who only took up sprinting this summer! He has so far clocked a personal best 12.56 seconds, do you reckon that's got Bolt worried?!

10.07amMeanwhile, Greece's Sofia Ifadidou has got us underway in the heptathlon long jump with a leap of 5.81 metres. Ennis should be going in around 15 minutes.

10.04amRojas and Kimbembe could now be drawn alongside Olympic champion Bolt, who has today insisted that he doesn't play mind games.

10.03amDevilert Arsene Kimbembe of the Congo finished second in that race and has also automatically qualified for round one of the men's 100m.

10.02amThe first of which has been won by 19-year-old Bolivian Artur Bruno Rojas, who clocked a time of 10.62 seconds.

10.00amBefore that, the preliminary round of the men's 100m gets underway. The likes of Blake, Bolt, Powell and Gay will not feature in this. These runners are competing for the right to run alongside those big names in the first round proper this afternoon.

9.58amFirst up in today's heptathlon is the long jump at around 10.05am. That is followed by the javelin, before the medals are handed out later tonight at the conclusion of the 800m. The next two events in the field, where Ennis hasn't always excelled, will decide a lot.

9.57amWe actually have the standings to hand - that's good of us isn't it!? View them here.

9.56amEnnis set personal bests in the 100m hurdles and the 200m, while producing "solid" performances in the high jump and shot put. All of which has left her top of the standings with three disciplines to come.

9.55amWith the heptathlon taking our main focus for around the first hour or so, let's recap on the four events unfolded yesterday...

9.53amTalking of British athletics, Martin Rooney will be running in the men's 400m later this morning. The 25-year-old has set himself the target of running a personal best at the Games. Find out what else he has had to say here.

9.51amThe session will end around 2pm, but we will back this evening to see Mo Farah go in the 10,000m final, while Ennis will complete her heptathlon campaign. Fingers crossed that it is a golden night for British athletics!

9.48amThen it is the turn of Bolt, Blake and co in the men's 100m round one qualifying.

9.47amEnnis will then return at around 11.40am for the sixth of her seven events in the javelin. By then, we should have a good idea whether or not she is going to claim gold.

9.46amThat is followed by women's pole vault, men's 400m qualifying and then women's 3000m steeplechase.

9.45amThe action gets underway at 10am with the men's 100m preliminary round and Ennis in the heptathlon.

9.44amBy the end of morning session we will have seen the likes of Jessica Ennis, Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake all in action. Not a bad start to the day at all!

9.37amHere we go again then! Day two of the athletics and I have to say that as good as yesterday was, the next few hours promise to be really special.
