Kenya's Martin Mathathi set a new a course record during the Great North Run this morning.
Mathathi took nine seconds off the previous record set by Zersenay Tadese's in 2005, winning the race in 58 minutes and 56 seconds.
"I couldn't believe [the time]," Muthathi said after the race. "My manager told me maybe I could run a 59-minute race and he gave me a lot of motivation and encouragement."
There was further success for Kenya in the women's race, with Lucy Karbuu taking first place.
