Mennea passes away aged 60

Former Italian sprinter Pietro Mennea has passed away at the age of 60, the Italian Olympic Committee have confirmed.

The gold medallist was a famous figure during the 1980s following his victory in the 200m final, which set a new world record time of 19.72 seconds in Mexico City in 1979.

Mennea also won gold in the 1980 Moscow Games in the 200m event, as well as bronze for the 4x400 relay.

The cause of death has not been announced.
