Mo Farah: 'Andy Vernon said I wasn't European'

Mo Farah says that Andy Vernon made a dig about him not being from Britain after beating his teammate to gold at the 2014 European Athletics Championships.

Two-time Olympic gold medal winner Mo Farah has claimed that fellow long-distance runner Andy Vernon made a remark about him not being from Europe.

The two runners have been involved in a Twitter dispute this week and Somali-born Farah says that the problems between them started when he beat Vernon in the 10,000m final at the 2014 European Athletics Championships.

"He came second in the race I won, we were sitting down together and there were a number of staff and athletes there too," The Telegraph quotes him as saying.

"One comment he made, which I didn't really like, was to say that he should have won the gold. I was like, what, the gold should have been given to you? And I was like, 'because he was the only European guy'?

"You can't say something like that. I was just biting my tongue at the time. That hurt me."

Farah moved to Britain at the age of eight and has since gone on to claim two Olympic and three world titles.
