UK Athletics head coach Charles van Commenee: 'Adam Gemili head in right place'

UK Athletics head coach Charles van Commenee dismisses concerns raised by Adam Gemili's coach Michael Afilaka that the young sprinter is under too much pressure.

UK Athletics head coach Charles van Commenee has dismissed concerns raised by Adam Gemili's coach Michael Afilaka that the young sprinter is under too much pressure.

After Gemili qualified for the Olympics team in Saturday's trials, Afilaka said that his sprinter was not in the right frame of mind and he might not recover from being thrown into the Olympics at such a young age.

Van Commenee has disagreed that Gemili should not compete and insisted that the 18-year-old will be looked after during next month's games.

"I didn't see an emotional wreck, I just saw a happy 18-year-old young man who is very level-headed," van Commenee said.

"When we send an 18-year-old to the Games obviously we look after him, there are things in place so that UKA looks after the welfare of athletes. It's a duty, we do that always."

Gemili is the second-fastest European this season over 100m, behind Frenchman Christophe Lemaitre.
