Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan says that Kirk Cousins will take all of the reps in the off-season in preparation for the 2013 NFL season.

Mike Shanahan has confirmed that the Washington Redskins will be preparing Kirk Cousins to lead the side during the off-season.

It is not yet known whether starting quarterback Robert Griffin III will have recovered from knee ligament surgery in time for the start of the 2013 season.

The Redskins head coach told NFL Network: "Kirk Cousins will work at the quarterback position. He'll have all the reps in the off-season.

"Robert will have a lot of reps, but it will be mental. You'll know when he's 100%. What he can do on the football field, what he can do through practices, and he will not come back until he's 100%.

"Robert will do it the right way and we'll find out in July exactly where he's at. You're hoping he's ready, but you can't plan for him to be ready."

Cousins deputised for Griffin when he initially injured his knee in December, leading the Redskins to a win over the Cleveland Browns.
