Tommy Smith happy with Ken Whisenhunt appointment

Tennessee Titans president Tommy Smith is delighted with the appointment of Ken Whisenhunt as the team's new head coach.

Tennessee Titans president and CEO Tommy Smith has said that he is happy with the appointment of Ken Whisenhunt as the team's new head coach.

Smith did not meet Whisenhunt until the day after he was announced as Mike Munchak's successor, although he did have a number of phone conversations during the interview process.

Whisenhunt joined the Titans from his position as the San Diego Chargers' offensive coordinator, and Smith believes that he is capable of bringing the desired style of football to the team having confirmed that he will take on play-calling duties.

"Time and time again, it came back to Ken. I've always said we were looking for someone who's intelligent, who understood and wanted to play the type of football that we want to play here, which is hard-nosed," Smith told reporters.

"I certainly have an intelligent man here who is well-versed in all aspects of the game, and the fact that he's going to be the play-caller delights me."

The Titans finished last season with a 7-9 record, while Whisenhunt helped the Chargers into the playoffs.
