Rex Ryan has said that he will decide who will be the New York Jets' starting quarterback at an "appropriate time".
Traditionally, teams with competition at the quarterback position name their starter before the third pre-season game.
The head coach told reporters: "Let's make sure we're making the appropriate decision at the appropriate time. I think it's going to be a fair competition. There's no doubt there's going to be a fair competition.
"We have competition at guard, but a young guy we felt great about, Brian Winters, obviously hasn't been able to play yet. There could be different factors. We still have great competition at the safety spot. There's a lot of competition for a lot of different spots, and it's not just quarterback.
"Again, I think it's too early to say. And just to say this guy is leading or whatever, again the competition is not complete. I think we'll go through the competition and I'm confident the right decision will be made."
