Antonio Cromartie released by New York Jets

The New York Jets release cornerback Antonio Cromartie.

The New York Jets have confirmed that they have released cornerback Antonio Cromartie, despite the player's hopes that he could sign a new deal with the team.

Rex Ryan, the Jets' head coach, said that Cromartie was one of the best players he had ever coached, with his athleticism and mental toughness particularly strong attributes.

"Cro is one of the finest athletes I've ever coached," Ryan told the club's official website.

"He was willing to contribute wherever the team needed him to win games, be it defense, special teams or offense.

"He has a passion and enthusiasm for the game and I wish him and his family the best."

Before he joined the Jets, Cromartie played for four seasons with the San Diego Chargers.
