Rob Gronkowski coy on return date

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski refuses to rule out playing in Sunday's opening match of the season as he continues his recovery from injury.

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski has remained tight-lipped over when he expects to return from injury.

Gronkowski underwent a number of surgeries on his arm during the off-season, while he is also currently recovering from another operation on his back in June.

The 24-year-old recently returned to practice for the first time since that procedure but remains unlikely to be ready for his side's opening match of the season this weekend.

However, he refused to rule out his participation in the match and vowed to be ready to play whenever he is called upon.

"Do I expect to play on Sunday? I'm preparing every single day to the max of my ability and preparing every day to do the best I can," ESPN quotes Gronkowski as saying.

"When my number is called, that's when I'll play."

The Patriots will face the Buffalo Bills in their first match of the regular season on Sunday.
