NFL reporter believes other gay players could "follow" Michael Sam's lead

Judy Battista says that Michael Sam's decision to announce his homosexuality could lead to more gay players across the NFL and other sports doing the same.

A New York-based NFL reporter has stated that she thinks Michael Sam's decision to come out as gay could lead to more players following suit, in American football and other sports.

Judy Battista of the NFL Network has said that she admires Missouri Tigers player Sam's announcement, which he made on television on Sunday.

She told NFL AM: "I don't think it's just the NFL. The NBA, MLB and in hockey there are certainly other gay players who are not out. They're watching closely to see how this plays out and is handled.

"Not just the initial fall out, but when he's on a team, how he's respected. I know that former players have come out to some people after their careers are over but I think some might follow Michael Sam now."

Battista's colleague Gil Brandt added that defensive end Sam was likely to attract a circus at the upcoming scouting combine thanks to his announcement.
