Jared Allen: 'Christian Ponder must be consistent'

Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen believes that quarterback Christian Ponder must step up to help the team challenge for a Super Bowl.

Jared Allen has urged quarterback Christian Ponder to "be the guy" to help the Minnesota Vikings challenge for a Super Bowl.

The NFC North side reached the playoffs last season, but lost in the wildcard round to the Green Bay Packers.

The defensive end told The Jim Rome Show: "I tell him all the time, you have to be the guy. [League MVP] Adrian [Peterson] can carry this team so far, our defense can carry this team so far.

"You know, you look at teams that historically win championships, and they have consistent play from the quarterback position.

"You should kind of have things down in your third year. We've got some good weapons for him. I hope he makes leaps and bounds, and has a phenomenal year, and we have a phenomenal year."

Ponder had 2,935 passing yards for the Vikings last season.
