Matthew Stafford has agreed a three-year contract extension with the Detroit Lions, according to NFL.com.

The league's official website reports that the terms of the agreement are being finalised, and that the quarterback could sign the deal this week.

The contract is said to be worth up to $53m (£35.6m), with $41.5 (£27.9m) guaranteed.

Stafford has averaged over 5,000 passing yards with the Lions in the last two seasons.
