Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has been accused of making a sexist comment to a female reporter during a press conference.
The 28-year-old claimed that it was "funny to hear a female" talk about American Football when questioned by Jourdan Rodrigue, a reporter for the Charlotte Observer.
Rodrigue had asked Newton about wide receiver Devin Funchess's route running, which caused the Panthers talisman to smirk and say: "Funny to hear a female talk about routes like - it's funny."
In a statement published on BBC Sport, the reporter said: "I was dismayed by his response.
"I did my job as an NFL beat writer and asked Cam Newton a question. His response not only belittled me but countless other women before me and beside me who work in similar jobs."
The Panthers promptly issued a statement clarifying Newton's remarks.
"I have spoken with Jourdan and Cam and I know they had a conversation where he expressed regret for using those words," a spokesman said. "We strive as a department to make the environment for media comfortable for everyone covering the team."
The Panthers play the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
