The Atlanta Falcons announced on Thursday that they have released veteran running back Steven Jackson after two years with the team.
The 31-year-old signed with the Falcons ahead of the 2013 season after spending nine years with the St Louis Rams, having been selected with the 24th overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft.
However, Jackson had just 347 carries for 1,250 yards and 12 touchdowns as he failed to revitalise his career with a new challenge in Atlanta.
Jackson now joins Reggie Bush, DeAngelo Williams and Chris Johnson as part of a group of running backs without a team ahead of free agency.
Meanwhile, the Falcons will save money against the salary cap with the move, while offensive co-ordinator Kyle Shanahan will now begin the search for a replacement.
