Newton shines against Eagles

Cam Newton recaptured his 2011 form as he guided the Carolina Panthers to a 30-22 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles last night.

Last year's offensive rookie player of the year threw for 306 yards, completed two touchdown passes and scored two rushing touchdowns in the game.

The NFC South side dominated the first quarter, with Gary Barnidge and Brandon LaFell finding the end zone.

The Eagles, who were without starting quarterback Michael Vick and running back LeSean McCoy, fought back in the second quarter to lead at half-time.

Newton and Bryce Brown each rushed for touchdowns in the third quarter to keep the game finely balanced.

The Panthers quarterback added his second with a two-yard run in the fourth to seal the win for Carolina.

The result leaves both sides bottom of their divisions.
