There is quite nothing like football in the world of sport – it is after all, a sport played in over 200 countries! Among the most favourite leagues is the English Premier League. But how did it come about and who are the key players and clubs?
Football originated in England. The sport started as a no-rules game, but developed its unique rules and regulations, as people looked to avoid injuries and bad behaviour on pitch. By 1863, the game had its first set of rules.
The first football clubs came about around the same time. The Foot-Ball Club of Edinburgh in Scotland was the first documented club, with the Surrey Football Club following on the footsteps in 1849. Currently, Britain's top clubs are Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool.
The clubs all play in the highest league: the Barclay's Premier League. Clubs in the league pay an average £11 million a year for their players. Among the biggest earning players are Manchester United's Way Rooney with £16.5 million and Chelsea's Eden Hazard with £14.7 million.
Both players have received plenty of accolades in the country during their careers. Rooney's been named as the PFA Players' Player of the Year during the 2009-10 season, with Hazard winning the same trophy during last season.
As well as the clubs, the grounds also have a legendary status in English football. The English national team plays its games at Wembley Stadium in London. Other famous English grounds include Manchester United's Old Trafford and Arsenal's Emirates Stadium.
