Mariah Carey Christmas classic finally reaches number one after 26 years

Mariah Carey's 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' hits the top spot in the UK singles chart 26 years after it was first released.

Mariah Carey's 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' has finally hit the top spot in the UK some 26 years after it was first released.

The iconic festive track re-enters the singles chart every year but has only previously peaked at number two - a position it matched in last week's chart.

Over the last week the song notched up 10.8 million streams to help propel it to the summit, ending Ariana Grande's six-week reign at the top with 'Positions'.

In a message to the Official Charts Company, Carey said: "Happy Christmas UK!! We finally made it!!! We are keeping the Christmas spirit alive together despite how dismal the year's been. Love you always! Joy to the world."

Another festive track famously to never reach number one, Wham's 'Last Christmas', is up one place to two, while The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl's 'Fairytale of New York' rises to four.

On the albums chart, Yungblud claims his first number one with his second release, Weird!, after 39,000 chart sales over the previous seven days.
