HBO announces that futuristic western thriller Westworld has been dropped after four seasons.

HBO has confirmed the end of futuristic western thriller Westworld after four seasons on the air.

The acclaimed show - an adaptation of the 1973 Michael Crichton film - starred the likes of Anthony Hopkins, Thandiwe Newton and Aaron Paul over the course of its run, earning 54 Emmy nominations and nine wins.

Creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy had previously expressed hope of returning for a fifth and final season, but HBO has now decided not to proceed.

The network said in a statement: "Over the past four seasons, Lisa and Jonah have taken viewers on a mind-bending odyssey, raising the bar at every step.

"We are tremendously grateful to them, along with their immensely talented cast, producers and crew, and all of our partners at Kilter Films, Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television. It's been a thrill to join them on this journey."

The show also featured JJ Abrams - known for Star Trek, Lost and Alias - as an executive producer.
