Channel 5's deputy director of programming says that he is 'unaware' of any discussions over the future of Neighbours.

Channel 5's deputy director of programmes Sebastian Cardwell has denied that the broadcaster is considering the future of Neighbours.

The long-running Aussie soap has been with Channel 5 since 2008 and receives most of its funding from the UK broadcasting deal.

A recent report suggested that Channel 5 has been weighing up whether to continue supporting the soap, which has been reduced from five episodes a week to four in Australia.

Asked if there is any truth to the story at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Cardwell replied: "Not that I'm aware of."

Channel 5's current deal for the soap - signed in late 2017 - is thought to expire at the end of 2021.
