James Cameron suggests that a more evil race of Na'vi will appear in the third Avatar movie.

Avatar director James Cameron has suggested that the upcoming third film in the franchise will depict a more evil race of Na'vi.

The original movie, released in 2009, introduced the Omaticaya clan, who live in the forests of Pandora, while the recently-released Avatar: The Way of Water brought the water-dwelling Metkayina clan into the fold.

Both of those tribes are peaceful and are at odds with their human colonisers, but Cameron says that the "Ash People" in the third film will be a less kinder race.

"[We will see] different cultures from those I have already shown," he told France's 20 Minutes. "The fire will be represented by the Ash People. I want to show the Na'vi from another angle because, so far, I have only shown their good sides.

"In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na'vi examples. In Avatar 3, we will do the opposite.

"We will also explore new worlds, while continuing the story of the main characters.

"I can say that the last parts will be the best. The others were an introduction, a way to set the table before serving the meal."

The as-yet untitled third movie is due for release on December 20, 2024.
