Avatar: The Way of Water soars past $2 billion in box office receipts to become the fifth highest-grossing film of all time.

Avatar: The Way of Water has soared past $2 billion (£1.61 billion) in global box office receipts to become the fifth highest-grossing film of all time.

The big-budget sequel - released just before Christmas - had reached a domestic total of $602m (£485.8m) by the end of Tuesday, with international receipts of $1.44 billion (£1.16 billion) taking the overall gross to $2.046 billion (£1.65 billion).

The figure sees The Way of Water leapfrog Avengers: Infinity War into fifth on the all-time list and keeps it on track for a top-four - and possible top-three - ranking.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens currently occupies fourth place with a total of $2.07 billion, while third place is taken by Titanic - also from James Cameron - with $2.19 billion.

The original movie stands way out in front at the top of the list, with $2.922 billion, followed by Avengers: Endgame in second with $2.8 billion.
