Paul McGann will reportedly reprise his role as The Doctor in Doctor Who for a new spinoff show.

Paul McGann will reportedly reprise his role as The Doctor in Doctor Who for his own spinoff series.

The actor played the Eighth Doctor in a one-off TV movie in 1996, with Christopher Eccleston then taking up the mantle when Russell T Davies revived the show in 2005.

McGann did return to the role for a mini-episode, 'The Night of the Doctor', in 2013 to mark the show's 50th anniversary and also made a cameo appearance in Jodie Whittaker's final episode last year.

Davies has returned as showrunner to herald a new era for the show, which includes a new investment deal between the BBC and Disney+ to fund new episodes of the main series as well as the possibility of multiple spinoff shows in the style of the Marvel Universe.

One of those shows is thought to be centred around UNIT, and now The Mirror claims that another will see McGann back as the Eighth Doctor for his own set of adventures.

A source told the newspaper: "Russell likes the idea of bringing back McGann with his own set of episodes in the TARDIS. Disney are on board as they want more original content and want to fully exploit the franchise as they know how big it could become."

Doctor Who returns with three special episodes celebrating the show's 60th anniversary on Saturday, November 25.
