'Match of the Day' to return on Saturday

The BBC confirms that Match of the Day will return on Saturday in a new format.

The BBC has confirmed that Match of the Day will return to the schedules this Saturday despite the postponement of all live football in the UK due to coronavirus.

Last week a rerun of Mrs Brown's Boys replaced the highlights show, prompting complaints from football fans on social media.

Starting this Saturday, MOTD will air in a revamped format that will film Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright recording their new spinoff podcast series. The first episode will see the trio debate the top 10 greatest captains of the Premier League era.

The BBC has also added a Football Focus special to the BBC One schedule at 12pm on Saturday, featuring Dan Walker introducing some of the best features and interviews from the season so far.

Guy Mowbray will present special programmes on Saturday and Sunday afternoon showcasing classic matches from the FA Cup quarter-finals in seasons gone by, including Watford vs. Arsenal (1987), West Brom vs. Nottingham Forest (1978), Everton vs. Ipswich (1985), Derby vs. Sheffield Wednesday (1993) and Manchester United vs. Portsmouth (2008).
