Harvey Weinstein is found guilty in his second sexual assault trial, effectively condemning the former movie producer to die in prison.

Former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein has been found guilty in a second trial for sexual assault in Los Angeles.

The 70-year-old is already serving 23 years behind bars for rape and sexual assault following a New York trial in 2020.

On Monday a jury found him guilty of raping a woman, in addition to charges of forced oral sex and penetration with a foreign object. The jury was unable to reach a verdict on several other charges.

The verdict effectively means that Weinstein will be condemned to die behind bars, with a jail time of up to 24 years expected for his new crime.

"Harvey Weinstein will never be able to rape another woman. He will spend the rest of his life behind bars where he belongs," said Jennifer Siebel Newsom, one of his accusers.

"Throughout the trial, Weinstein's lawyers used sexism, misogyny, and bullying tactics to intimidate, demean, and ridicule us survivors. The trial was a stark reminder that we as a society have work to do."

Accusations against Weinstein first published in 2017 are widely credited for kickstarting the #MeToo movement, which has inspired victims of sexual assault to come forward with their stories.
