The BBC announces plans to launch BBC One in HD across all English regions by the end of 2022.

The BBC has announced its intent to launch HD versions of BBC One across all English regions by the end of next year.

All 12 English regional versions of BBC One, as well as three sub-regional variants, currently broadcast in SD quality only on platforms including Freeview, Sky and Freesat.

BBC One Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are all served by dedicated HD simulcasts, but in England there is only a single HD feed of BBC One, which is forced to go on pause whenever regional programming is broadcast.

As part of its long-term strategy to help the BBC reconnect with audiences outside of London - announced today - the corporation confirmed that it plans to go HD in every region by the end of 2022 in order to "enhance the viewing experience for millions of viewers".

The strategy document explained: "The BBC's regional and Nations TV news service at 6.30pm is the UK's most-watched news programme. It matters now more than ever before."

The BBC also plans to created a new "tailored" version of BBC One covering three regions - Yorkshire, North West and North East - with bespoke continuity and marketing.
