Live Commentary: Wimbledon day one - as it happened

Sports Mole brings you live updates from day one of Wimbledon.

Good morning and welcome to Sports Mole's live coverage of the opening day of the 126th annual Wimbledon Championships in London.

Rafael Nadal triumphed on clay in the men's French Open two weeks ago, but now we focus our attention on the grass court with another Grand Slam upon us.

Men's world number one Novak Djokovic will attempt to secure his fifth major trophy out of his last seven tournament attempts, while Nadal and Roger Federer are certain to be among the latter stages.

Victory for Federer would see the Swiss equal Pete Sampras's record of seven Wimbledon titles – but he must end a 29-month wait for a Grand Slam.

Home favourite Andy Murray will also look to improve on his showing in Paris - where he was well beaten by Spaniard David Ferrer.

The favourite for the women's crown is undoubtedly current world number one Maria Sharapova, who won Wimbledon at the age of 17, but Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki are also strong on grass.

21.18That's about it from me, for any of the other significant results from today, check out the live scores box on the right. We'll be back tomorrow morning for day two at the All England Club on Sports Mole. See you then.

21.12Just quickly, Rufin does wrap it up 6-4 3-6 5-7 6-4 6-4 to advance to the second round.

21.10While I'm waiting to see if that one comes to a close, here's a round-up of today's headlines before I bid you good night...

21.09If Rufin does win, he'll play the winner of the Almagro-Rochus match which is also in a fifth but has been suspended for the day.

21.08Darcis holds serve and Rufin will now serve for the match at 5-4 in the fifth.

21.06The only game still going is the men's game between Rufin and Darcis, where the former is one game from victory.

21.03Aaaah, just as we creep past 9pm it's all beginning to come to a close at SW19. Zvonereva's match on court one is abandoned due to bad light, as are the Mahut-Lorenzi, McHale-Konta and Almagro-Rochus matches.

21.01Also, it's all over on Court 7, where Istomin has ousted 23rd-seed Seppi 8-6 in the fifth. He'll play Oliver Golding's conquerer Andreev in the next.

20.59It's all happening at Wimbledon! Mahut takes the fourth to take his match against Lorenzi to a fifth. Does the Frenchman ever like to do it the easy way?

20.58GAME, SET AND MATCH! 7-1 was the score in the tiebreak as Wimbledon debutant Hampton knocks out 27th-seed Hantuchova (to my annoyance!) Hampton vs. Watson should be a cracker!

20.57SET! Zvonereva duly obliges and they're level on the second showcourt.

20.56Take back what I said about Almagro! He's broken straight back by Rochus, 1-1 in the decider between those two.

20.56Women's 12th seed Zvonereva is a point away from levelling her match on No. 1 Court at 6-3 up in the tiebreak.

20.54The McHale-Konta ladies' match on 17 is in the depths of a third, it's 7-7 in games! No tiebreaks in the final set of grand slams remember.

20.52Almagro seems to have overcome his wobble in the opening two sets against the small Belgian Rochus. The Spaniard has broken straight away in the fifth.

20.51Watson will play the winner of the Hantuchova-Hampton match going on on 2, where the second set has just gone to a tiebreak. Can 27th-seed Hantuchova take this to a decider?

20.49GAME, SET AND MATCH! Benesova pushes a backhand return long and Watson is absolutely delighted with her first win at Wimbledon. She salutes the adoring crowd, before walking off beaming from ear-to-ear. Swell.

20.48Match point for Watson on Centre, the crowd are loving the performance of the young Guernsey girl.

20.47The game on 2 has come to a brief halt as Hantuchova receives some extra strapping on those supermodel-long legs of hers. The Slovakian is a game from defeat at 5-6 down in the second.

20.46I mentioned earlier that Almagro was a game from victory, sorry this was wrong. The 12th seed actually lost the first two sets and has just taken the fourth to send the match into a fifth.

20.45Double break for Watson! She's now within one game of victory on Centre.

20.44GAME, SET AND MATCH! Mathilde Johansson wraps up the third 6-3 to overcome Tsurenko. She'll face the winner of the McHale-Konta match in the next round.

20.43Double break for Almagro and he's within one of victory on Court 19.

20.40Watson is trying everything to get a double break here. She tracks down every Benesova ball before a delightful drop shot from the Czech brings the marathon game back to deuce. Centre court sighs.

20.37Good ol' Daniela, she saves two match points before levelling the second set at 5-5.

20.36Watson and Benesova are having a right ding-dong game on centre, with the latter serving a 1-4 down.

20.35France's Johansson looks on course for victory on Court 12, she's up 4-2 in the third.

20.34Rufin gets a break in the first game of the fifth in his match against Darcis.

20.34Almagro is a break up early on in the fourth against Rochus, he leads 3-1.

20.32The American tries a drop shot against the long-legged Slovakian and doesn't pull it off, we're at deuce.

20.31Oh no! My crush Hantuchova is match point down against the unknown Hampton.

20.29Rufin has levelled the match with Darcis on 6, they're not two apiece and heading into a decider.

20.28Watson's stretched her lead out to 4-1 in the second on centre, while on 7, Seppi had the chance to close out the match in the fifth but has just been broken back.

20.26On 17, another American Christina McHale and wildcard Brit Johanna Konta are also level in sets.

20.25The final two games I haven't mentioned are on courts 12 and 17. First, Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko and France's Mathilde Johansson are at a set-all.

20.22On Court 3, Jamie Lee Hampton has a one-set lead over the tennis player I most fancied growing up, Daniela Hantuchova. It's on serve in the second (come on Daniela!)

20.19Watson's just broken again in the second to take a 2-0 lead.

20.18Back to the women and their 12th seed Vera Zvonereva is on No. 1 Court where she takes on Germany's Mona Barthel. The underdog took the first 6-2 and the second is evenly poised at 2-2.

20.16Before I tell you about those, Almagro has just taken that third set in the tiebreak. The 12th seed now has a 2-1 lead in sets.

20.14Aside from the Watson match, that leaves four match women's matches going on at the moment...

20.13Another ladies' match has just finished on Court 14, with Maria Kirilenko having no trouble against Romania's Alexandra Cadantu, easing to a 6-1 6-3 win.

20.11SET! Britain's Heather Watson shows no fear on centre court and takes the first 6-2. She's 0-30 down in the opening game of the second though after a double fault on the opening point.

20.10Also, Andreas Seppi and Daniel Istomin are in a fifth set. Clay-court specialist Nicolas Almagro is in a third-set tiebreak with Olivier Rochus, while Jerzy Janowicz has just overcome Simone Bolelli 3-6 6-3 6-3 6-3.

20.06In the men's side of the draw there are five games going on. Paolo Lorenzi leads marathon man Nicolas Mahut by two sets to one on Court 4, while on Court 6 Frenchman Guillaume Rufin leads Belgian Steve Darcis by the same advantage.

11.07On the women's side of the draw - Serena Williams will be keen to make up for her first-round defeat in France. Meanwhile, defending champion Petra Kvitova, former world number one Victoria Azarenka and 2007 runner-up Marion Bartoli are also worth a mention.

11.05Cases could also be made for the likes of Thomas Berdych, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Del Potro. However, it is difficult to look past the top four in the men's draw.

11.03However, it has been two-and-a-half years since Federer last won a Grand Slam. If he were to secure the trophy, he would be guaranteed to get back to number one in the rankings. He would also become the first player over the age of 30 to hold down the trophy since Andre Agassi.

11.01The other lucky man? Del Potro who won the US Open in 2009. What of Federer you ask? Well the Swiss won six championships and made one final in a seven-year span at Wimbledon between 2003-09.

10.59Looking at the men's favourites for a moment. Either Nadal or Djokovic have won each of the past nine major tournaments. They have also met in the last four finals. Add Federer into the equation and those three have won 28 of the past 29 majors on offer.

10.59For the 16th time in the 18 Grand Slams the pair have played, Murray is in the same draw as Nadal. The Spaniard has also beaten Murray in the semi-finals in the last two years.

10.57He could then face the huge serve of Ivo Karlovic in the second round, before facing Kevin Anderson in the third and then Marin Cilic or Milos Raonic in the fourth round. He could then face Ferrer - who he lost to in Paris - in the last eight. Or an equally tough match against Juan Martin Del Potro.

10.55Our very own Andy Murray must once again do it the hard way if he is to progress to the semi-finals this year. The British number one will face Russian Nikolay Davydenko in his first-round match on Tuesday.
