Kei Nishikori into fourth round in straight sets at US Open

Japan's Kei Nishikori is through to the fourth round of the US Open after beating Argentina's Leonard Mayer in straight sets at Flushing Meadows.

Kei Nishikori has progressed to the fourth round at the US Open following a 6-4 6-2 6-3 win over Leonardo Mayer this evening.

The Argentine served well in the first set as he tried to put his opponent under pressure, but Nishikori made some solid returns to force a break and eventually claimed the opener.

Nishikori upped his game in the second, while the 23rd seed could not maintain his first-serve percentage to give his opponent a couple of easy breaks, allowing the Japanese player to race towards a place in the fourth round.

The 10th seed found himself a break down early in the third, but stunned his opponent with the nature of his emphatic comeback, winning six games in a row to wrap up the match.

Nishikori will face either Milos Raonic or Victor Estrella Burgos in the next round.
